The BLACHIR report
The Birmingham and Lewisham African and Caribbean Health Inequalities Review (BLACHIR) is a groundbreaking report aimed at addressing and rectifying long-standing health inequalities faced by the Black African and Caribbean populations in these boroughs. This report, a rare but necessary 100% Black voice, combines published data, evidence, and lived experiences to provide a comprehensive understanding of these issues. Published in March 2022, it is the result of a joint effort between Lewisham Council and Birmingham City Council, with Kinaraa playing a crucial role in Lewisham by facilitating collaboration among several local Black third sector organisations and the Director of Public Health.
The report reveals that the existing healthcare system fails to adequately address the needs and concerns of Black African and Caribbean communities in the UK. It identifies 39 actionable opportunities, each aligned with local health and wellbeing boards, demanding immediate attention and implementation. BLACHIR calls for systemic change, highlighting the deep-rooted oppression, racism, and discrimination within the healthcare system and exposing a persistent pattern of inequality.
